Verify the contact
Were you contacted about unclaimed property?
ReclaimPath does not currently make outbound calls, send text messages, or email people about specific property. If someone contacted you claiming to represent ReclaimPath, treat it as unverified until you confirm it with us directly.
Our current outreach policy
How to verify any outreach
These four steps work for any recovery company, not only ours.
- 1
Assume nothing from the message itself
Do not use a phone number, link, or email address supplied in the outreach. Scammers copy real company names, including ours.
- 2
Write to us directly
Email support@reclaimpath.org, typed by hand into your own email app, and describe the contact you received. We will tell you plainly whether it came from us.
- 3
Check the free official route first
Search your state's official unclaimed-property program yourself. If property is listed in your name, you can claim it there at no cost, with or without help.
- 4
Report the contact if it was not us
Report suspected recovery scams to your state unclaimed-property program and to your state attorney general's consumer protection office.
Warning signs of a recovery scam
Unclaimed property is a common cover story for fraud because the offer sounds like good news.
Legitimate recovery arrangements are paid from the recovered property, and many states cap the percentage. A request for a wire, gift card, or crypto payment before anything is recovered is a scam.
Unclaimed property does not expire in most states. Anyone telling you the money will be lost in 24 or 48 hours is manufacturing urgency.
Your state program verifies your identity through its own secure process. No representative needs your online banking credentials or a full SSN over the phone.
ReclaimPath is not a government agency, and no private company is. State treasurers and comptrollers contact people by official mail, not by pressuring phone calls.
Independent service, free official route
The free official route is always first.
You never need a company's permission or help to claim your own property. Search and claim directly through your state's official program at no cost.
What we will never ask for
We do not ask for banking credentials, a full Social Security number, gift cards, wire transfers, or advance payment. We do not request identity documents by email.
Not a government agency
ReclaimPath is independent. Official state programs are the authoritative place to search for and claim unclaimed property, and they are free to use directly.
